Still Life Studies

There is some negativity about abstract art.  I started as most artists with watercolour painting and was used to doing very detailed work.

When I started on my experience working with Oils and Acrylic and creating Abstract forms I found the freedom of the style was exciting. I was finding a new creativity than experienced with traditional painting approaches.

Still Life Study # 1

Abstract is not easy and its not just throwing paint on a canvas.

There is more effort and thought in painting these forms, layering and colour combinations.

I often get asked by art colleagues to help with training and advice on starting with Abstract art.

To help with this process I start with simple still life examples which is a great tool for helping artists new to the Abstract approach.

Pinky and Perpy – Acrylic on Box Canvas – 16″ x 20″

Still Life Study # 2 called ‘Perpy’

Two of my earlier abstract pieces, where I dictated a self-enforced limited pallet of colour.

Still Life Study # 3 called ‘Pinky’

The two pieces form a complementary viewpoint when shown together. Rich in texture, limiting of colour to highlight simplicity of form and shape.

Have a look at my webpage Teaching Workshops where you can see how everyone in my group was able to do their first Abstract piece in the session.
